As a school, we pursue the goal of introducing our pupils to the topics and challenges of sustainable development in the long term. Numerous activities in the context of education for sustainable development (ESD) are now an integral part of our everyday school life. The Biological Station Education Center is also a partner of the state program "School of the Future".
While one class first hiked to the observation tower to watch the flamingos in particular, they were also greeted by the loudly calling black-headed gulls that breed around the Zwillbrocker Venn. Meanwhile, the other class went over to the pond to do some "netting".
In class, the children had previously worked on factual texts about various pond animals and created their own Book Creator book, which they then even annotated with a screen recording. They were able to use and deepen this prior knowledge in a discussion with Ms. Hüning from the Biological Station.
Under their expert guidance, the pupils then caught various pond animals - including rudder bugs, pond newts and dragonfly larvae. The animals were carefully placed in prepared water bowls so that they could be observed more closely. After observing them, the children naturally released all the animals back into their natural habitat.
In pleasant weather, the children experienced an exciting and informative day that gave them a clear understanding of the importance of nature and environmental protection.
